With explosions of flowers from late-spring through summer to early autumn, ably supported by shrubs to give year-round structure and interest, The Cottage is designed to maximise ‘flower power’ and appeal to all of your senses. A nature-loving design, where modern plant choices blend with the wilder principles of the English cottage garden.

Structure and colour comes from the flowers and berries of Viburnum and delicately spring-blossoming Fuji cherry tree, with year-round colour and interest provided by Hellebores and Tiarellas. The Cottage truly sparkles in the summer with Astrantia, Fuschia, Lupin and Verbena creating symphonies of colour, shape, and height.

Variety

From structural plants, to light and airy plants, from ever-green plants to plants bursting with colour, The Cottage provides a year-round spectacle, though it does require a little more attention.

Pastels

With flowering plants chosen particularly for their pastel colours, The Cottage will glimmer in the spring and summer, and soften in the Autumn.

Wild

Whilst all our gardens will welcome local wildlife, the flowers, seed heads, berries and shelter make The Cottage a particularly welcoming habitat for nature.

What plants to expect in your Cottage Garden

We've worked hard to create plant combinations that not only transport you to a sleepy countryside garden, but also flex to your space (e.g. its size & position) and needs (e.g. pet-friendly).

This means that the plant choices may vary from order to order, to ensure the best results for you.

The Inspiration

The Flower Garden, Gravetye Manor by William Robinson

This garden explodes with life. Year-round planting to create year-round movement, vibrancy and life, carefully structured to create a relaxed, lively and living garden of overflowing mixed borders.

The Manor House, Upton Grey

This garden by one of the great English garden designers - Gertrude Jekyll - was an important inspiration for The Cottage. The formality of the manor meets the structured informality of the planting to create a wonderful blend of old and new to create a full and beautiful picture, humming with life.

Thomas Hardy’s Cottage

It would be silly not to mention an actual cottage when talking about our inspiration for The Cottage garden, and where better than the gardens at the cottage of beloved novelist and poet Thomas Hardy. This represents the epitome of cottage gardening.
