Who doesn’t love the Mediterranean? Just the name evokes a feeling of escape, relaxation and, well, holidays. Yes, it’s the climate, the warm seas, the amazing food. But the plants really play their part too. Whether it’s iconic trees like Olive, Bay and

Fig, the delicately scented shrubs and plants of Lavender, Thyme and Sage or the flowing grasses and airy perennials such as Stipa Tenuissima and Verbena; all help craft an atmosphere for your garden that magically transports you to those warmer climes.

The Principles

There are a number of key elements that elegantly combine to create your Mediterranean garden.

The Med colour palette

Sea blue

Lavender purple

Light mauve

Silver grey

Olive green

Informal

A relaxed planting style creates a sense of effortlessness in how the plants combine, creating a flowing effect which carries the eye.

Aromatic

Scented shrubs and herbs help fill the air with wonderful scents and aromas on a warm summer's evening.

Al fresco

A style that always has outdoor living in mind, with dining and seating areas furnished with rustic furniture, soft greenery and generous levels of terracotta.

What plants to expect in your Mediterranean Garden

We've worked hard to create plant combinations that not only evoke sun-kissed southern Europe, but also flex to your space (it's size & position) and needs (pet-friendly). This means that the plant choices may vary from order to order, to ensure the best results for you.

The Designs

Each design in this theme has been carefully curated to give you the perfect balance of statement plants, varying heights and flowering throughout the year, in both shade and sun.

Please note that we create your design based on a range of plants to ensure they best suit your space, aspect and flower bed(s) size - the plants mentioned on this page are representative of the theme but there can be variations!

The Inspiration

Fabbrica, Tuscany

An extraordinary private garden by the renowned designer Luciano Giubbilei - it offers a masterclass in elegantly combining shape, form, plant and flower variety and aromatics. Traditional in its origins, yet modern in its interpretation.

Beth Chatto's Gravel Garden

A wonderful, drought-tolerant, Mediterranean-themed garden (which in a previous life was a car park) from one of Britain's most celebrated designers. Beth Chatto was the true expert at transforming spaces using plants adapted by nature to thrive in different, often challenging conditions.

Villefranche-sur-Mer, Nice

Led by his expert knowledge of plants suited to a dry climate, designer James Basson created a rich and textural garden on the French Riviera that thrives in dry conditions and delivers on impact, shape and variety.
